Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve was created in part to protect and interpret the history of the Klondike- Alaska Gold Rush and the legacy of gold placer mining in the region. Along the Yukon River between Eagle and Circle visitors today can see evidence of the region’s placer gold past, including prospectors’ log cabins, mining camps. Suction dredging continues to be actively pursued on the Fortymile River in Workings: Placer gold was discovered near the mouth of the Fortymile River, in the Yukon Territory, Canada in and gravel bars were mined. Gold was discovered on Franklin Gulch (see EA) in Alaska in (Spurr, ).

The Placer River is a beautiful little river (or large creek) that travels from Spenard Glacier north until it empties into the southeastern corner of the Turnagain Arm. The valley formed by the river is a beautiful section of the Kenai peninsula, a section through which there are no roads, so the only way to access it is foot, kayak, or train. Gold was first discovered on the Fortymile River in in the vicinity of the Yukon-Alaska border. The discovery of gold on the Fortymile River led to the first major Yukon gold rush. In , miners were at work using picks shovels and rockers; using these hand tools they extracted more t ounces of placer gold in that year.

Gold placer deposits along the upper Yukon River, in the region between the river villages of Circle and Eagle, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation was conducted intermittently between and as part of an evaluation of mineral resources on lands proposed for inclusion in the National Park System.

Undiscovered Placer Deposits in Alaska November by Jim Halloran Being an Alaskan geologist and prospector, I feel qualified to address the question of whether new placer gold discoveries are possible here in the 49th state.

The Fortymile River region in east-central Alaska has a long and colorful history as the site of the first major gold discovery in interior Alaska. Placer gold has been mined in the region nearly every year since its original discovery in Total gold production is approximatelytroy ounces.

Although many of the rich deposits have been mined, there still exist areas that contain gold. Placer tin, in the form of cassiterite (Sn02) and (or) tinstone (fragments including cassiterite and some vein or rock material), is known or reported in deposits that have been prospected or mined for placer gold in four areas adjacent to the Yukon River in central Alaska, to miles west of Fairbanks.

These areas are: the Morelock Creek area, on the north side of the Yukon River about. Placer River Float is a Class I to II (With High Water), mellow braided river, no big rapids. Most guests will not get splashed with water. Most guests will not get splashed with water.
